Titus 2:9-10, Do all to the glory of God Part 23

Titus 2:9-10

“Teach slaves to be subject to their masters in everything, to try to please them, not to talk back to them, and not to steal from them, but to show that they can be fully trusted, so that in every way they will make the teaching about God our Savior attractive.”

Slavery was a basic element of Roman society and culture; therefore, Paul addresses Christian slaves and tells them how they ought to live. Romans 6:16 tells us we are either slaves to sin, which leads to death, or of obedience which leads to righteousness. Matthew 6:24 tells us we cannot serve two masters; we cannot serve both God and money. We are all slaves to something, either to God or to sin. Looking at Titus 2:9-10 we can apply these commands to ourselves as well. Who do you serve? The Bible tells us do all things to the glory of God (1 Corinthians 10:31). In all you say and do, do it to God’s glory. If you’re called to be a stay-at-home mom, do your duties to God’s glory. If you’re called to be an employee, do your work to God’s glory. How do we do this? Our text gives us four commands. One, please them well in all things. So, whatever you are asked to do, if it’s not contrary to God’s word, do it to the best of your ability. Two, don’t talk back. This means we must not argue or make excuses but obey. Three, do not steal. Simply put, don’t be a thief with your time or with your employers’ things. Four, show fidelity. Be loyal and faithful and do exactly what you’re asked to do and how you’re asked to do it. Why? Not only because the Bible tells us to, but, as our text says, “so that in every way they will make the teaching about God our Savior attractive.” We are to do all things to God’s glory, and this should show a marked difference between Christians and unbelievers. When unbelievers see our lives, they should be attracted to God’s word and want what Christians have. We are called to serve God faithfully in all areas of our lives. We all serve someone, and our actions will show who. So, who do you serve?

1. Look up Romans 6:15-23. What does this tell us about being slaves?

2. Look up 1 Corinthians 10:31-33. What does this tell us about our actions?

3. Look up Ephesians 6:5-8. What does this tell us about how we behave and the purpose of our commanded behavior?

4. Where else in the Bible does it talk about how slaves ought to behave?

Gracious master and heavenly Father, I humbly come before you now with thankfulness for the grace you have given and for purchasing us with Your precious blood. Help me to serve You better, in all I say and do. Help me to reflect Your goodness and to live so others are won for You. Forgive me when and where I fall short, not because I am worthy, but through the sacrifice of my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen
