Titus 2 Redeemed to do what is good Part 27
Titus 2:14
“Who gave Himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for Himself a people that are His very own, eager to do what is good.”
The Christian life is lived between two points: Christ has appeared, and He will appear again. We look back to what He has done, and we look forward to what He will do. Our text points us back to what He has done for us so we’ll know why we are to do what He says. Christ came and redeemed us from all wickedness, and having purchased us by His death on the cross, He released us from the power of sin. Not only are we freed from sin, but we are also purified from it’s influence and control so that we might live in accordance with God’s good and perfect will. 1 Corinthians 6:20 says, “For you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.” Ephesians 2:10 says, “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” The Bible, quite clearly, tells us that we are not our own; we belong to God and therefore ought to live as He commands. We are exclusively Christ’s, and our lives must be distinctly marked by this. God planned us and planned good works for us. We must understand our sin and evil, and the direction our lives were headed in in order to understand where we would be, were it not for the grace of God. When we realize how great our sin and misery is, then, by God’s grace, we see how great a debt we owe. Out of thankfulness and obedience, we are to live as God desires: eager to do what is good. Christ gives us the power and understanding to live in accordance with God’s will. By the Holy Spirit we can do so, with a view to eternal life and this should motivate us to do the good that God has set forth for us. So take a good look at your life, confront your sins, ask for forgiveness, thank God for His redeeming work and His grace, and live to do what God desires.
1. What does it mean that we are redeemed from all wickedness?
2. What does Galatians 2:20 tell us about redemption?
3. What does Romans 12:2 tell us about how we are to live?
4. What does Ephesians 1:4 tell us about God’s plan for us?
5. How are we able to do what God asks?
Dear God and heavenly Father, please take my hands and use them to do Your service and the good works You have set forth for me. Please take my mind and fill it with Your word and wisdom. Please take my feet and lead them to do Your will, and in this filthy world, take my life and make it pure and pleasing to You. Amen.
