Titus 3 Justification Part 35
Titus 3:7
“So that being justified by His grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.”
Justification. What does it mean? Theologically speaking, the dictionary says it is the action of declaring and making righteous in the sight of God. We’ve already learned of our need for a Savior, that among men, “there is no one righteous, not even one.” (Romans 3:10b) How, then, can we be put right before God, the Lawgiver and Judge? 2 Corinthians 5:21 gives us a nice summary when it says, “For our sake, He made Him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.” Jesus died for us, He rose, and by His blood we are declared not guilty and acquitted of all our sins. We are given free and full forgiveness from the law's curse. All of this is only possible because of the grace of God. God offered Himself to save us from our sin. In giving the Son, He gave Himself. God took His own love to appease His own righteous anger by bearing it in His own self, that is, the Son, when He took our place and died for us. Ephesians 2:8 tells us, “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God.” Christ’s “one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men.” (Romans 5:18b) Faith, in itself, does not bring justification, but through faith we receive the gift of grace. God’s grace is the source of our justification, and faith is the means by which we receive His grace. We must, in faith, humbly come before Him and thank Him for this awesome gift of grace, for without grace there is no possibility of justification.
1. Read Romans 3:21-31. What can we learn about grace and justification from this passage?
2. What can we learn from Romans 5 regarding justification and where it comes from?
3. Justification should bring about a change in us; what, then, can we learn about this from Galatians 2:15-21?
4. Many passages in the Bible speak about justification and what it means for us; find a few passages and summarize what we can learn from them.
Gracious God, giver of life, majestic Lord and Savior, I come before You in awe to worship Your majesty and greatness. Your goodness is beyond my understanding, and I thank You for the grace You’ve given me in Christ Jesus. Thank you for giving of Yourself in order that I might be justified and saved. You are gracious, merciful and compassionate and I praise You. Forgive me for my sins, I know they are many, and wash me clean in the blood of Christ, Amen.
